What is WIN95-L?

WIN95-L is a public mailing list devoted to the discussion of Windows95. There are no costs invloved all you need is an Internet email address to join and particpate. See the WIN95-L Home Page.

How do I join?

Joining WIN95-L is a simple process. WIN95-L is run by Listserv® software so to subscribe you send a mail message addressed to:

LISTSERV@PEACH.EASE.LSOFT.COM

On this mail message you should leave the Subject: line blank and put the following text as thefirst and only line in the body of your message:

SUB WIN95-L FirstName Lastname

Be sure to put your real First and Last names in place of FirstName Lastname.
Do not include signature lines or any other text in the body of this message as they will not be recognized by Listserv.

Confirming your subscription command

If you sent the subscribe command correctly and there are no other problems you will receive a reply to your request that you must respond to in order to confirm your subscription. The reason this is done is to ensure that Listserv has the correct address for you before adding you to the mailing list.

All you have to do is send a reply to this message with no Subject and one word in the body of the reply:

OK

You should then receive a message stating that you are succesfully subscribed to the list. If you do not receive this message within a reasonable amount of time send another confirmation command this time adding the confirmation number originally sent to you. The body of this message should look like this:

OK 291888

What to do if you have problems subscribing to the list.

If you have followed the above instructions and you are unable to subscribe send a message to

WIN95-L-REQUEST@PEACH.EASE.LSOFT.COM

asking for help subscribing to the list. This address forwards mail to me so please include a descriptive Subject line i.e. "Unable to subscribe to WIN95-L".

What are the List Topic keywords for this list?

Due to the large number of messages as well as the wide variety of WINDOWS 95 topics discussed this list now has LIST TOPICS installed. List topics are keywords used in the subject line of messages to the list so subscribers can set their individual subscriptions to only receive messages in the topics they are interested in.
The following are the list topics that have been installed on this list along with descriptions of each:
APPS: Messages regarding specific applications and Windows 95
DESKTOP: Messages regarding the Windows95 Desktop it's configuration and it's use...
COMM: Messages regarding Windows95 communications of any type
INSTALL: Messages regarding questions problems or hints with installation of Windows95
BACKUP: Messages regarding backup issues with Windows95
BUGS: Messages regarding known/unknown bugs with Windows 95
EXCHANGE: Messages regarding use configuration etc of MS Exchange
MSN: Messages regarding MSN (Microsoft Network)
NET: Messages regarding any aspect of networking with Windows95
HARDWARE: Messages regarding hardware setup/config issues with Windows95
WISH: "Wish List" For things you wish you could do knew how to do wish were added in future releases etc
OTHER: Anything else that falls outside of the above topics.

How do I use List Topics when posting to this list?
ANY message to the list (intended for distribution to the rest of the list) must contain one or more of the above topics followed by a colon (:) in order to be distributed properly. More than one topic can be used but it must be spelled properly and be one of the installed keywords.
Example:

A message about installing Windows 95 with a Trident SVGA card might have a subject line that looks like this:

From: Joe Guy
Subj: INSTALL HARDWARE: Trident SVGA not recognized?

Or a message regarding setting up PPP might look like this:

From: Joe Guy
Subj: COMM NET: PPP with a 2400 baud modem?

or if you wish this:

From: Joe Guy
Subj: NET: What's DHCP?

Everything you post must contain the keywords followed by a colon or it won't get to your desired audience.

To repeat a message to the list must contain a valid topic keyword follwed by a colon (:).

What will happen if I don't use keywords when posting?

If there are no valid keywords in your subject line your message will get sent to the default keyword OTHER. Only subscribers who chose OTHER or ALL as a keyword will get your message you may have wished for better distribution.

How to set what keywords you receive

As a default the keyword selection for your subscription is set to ALL which means you will receive any and all posts to the list.

You can change them the same way you change other subscription options by sending a command to the LISTSERV.

You would send a message to

LISTSERV@PEACH.EASE.LSOFT.COM

with no subjectand the following text as the first line in the body of your message:

SET WIN95-L TOPICS: xxx yyy zzz

where xxx yyy and zzz can be:

* A list of all the topics you wish to receive. In the above example these topics replace any other topics you may have subscribed to before. For instance after 'SET WIN95-L TOPICS: OTHER NET' you will receive other and networking and nothing else.

* Updates to the list of topics you currently receive. A plus sign indicates a topic that should be added a minus sign requests the removal of a topic. For instance SET WIN95-L TOPICS: +OTHER -NET adds other and removes networking. If a topic name is given without a + or 0 sign 0 is assumed: "SET WIN95-L TOPICS: +OTHER NET" adds other and networking. The first topic name must have the plus sign to show that this is an addition and not a replacement. In other words SET WIN95-L TOPICS: OTHER NET would replace your current topic selections with just OTHER and NET instead of adding OTHER and NET to your current selection.

* If you want to set all the topics for your subscription you can use SET WIN95-L TOPICS: ALL 0 Remember ALL is the default. If you don't change your selection you will get all messages.

* If you would like all but a few topics you can use something like SET WIN95-L TOPICS: ALL -EXCHANGE which would give you every topic except EXCHANGE..

You should not forget to include the special OTHER topic if you want to receive general discussions which were not labeled properly or that fall outside of the other topics. On the other hand if the subscriber only wants to receive properly labeled messages it should not be included. ALL does include OTHER.

Do not surround your commands to the LISTSERV in quotes. You should send

SET WIN95-L TOPICS: xxx yyy zzz

and NOT

SET WIN95-L TOPICS: xxx yyy zzz

What is Digest mode?

When you first subscribe to WIN95-L each message that is sent to the list is delivered to you individually depending on what List Topic Keywords you have set. Some subscribers may not wish to receive this many messages a day (between 100-300).

When you change your subscription to DIGEST mode you will receive a compilation of the day's messages in one large message with an index of subjects at the top. WIN95-L is set to mail a digest whenever it has collected 1000 lines of text to be compiled into a digest. This typically occurs about 5 times a day. So instead of 100-300 messages per day you'll only receive 5-10.

How do I change my subscription to DIGEST mode?

Once you are succesfully subscribed to WIN95-L you can change your subscription to DIGEST mode by sending a message to

LISTSERV@PEACH.EASE.LSOFT.COM

with no subject line and the following command as the only text in the body of your message:

SET WIN95-L DIGEST

I'm in DIGEST mode how do I get back to normal mode?

You can change your subscription to NORMAL mode by sending a message to

LISTSERV@PEACH.EASE.LSOFT.COM

with no subject line and the following command as the only text in the body of your message:

SET WIN95-L MAIL

How do I unsubscribe from WIN95-L

To unsubscribe from WIN95-L send a message to

LISTSERV@PEACH.EASE.LSOFT.COM

with no subject and the following command as the first and only line in the body of your message:

SIGNOFF WIN95-L

What to do if you have problems unsubscribing from the list.

If you have followed the above instructions and you are unable to unsubscribe send a message to
