2. "TECH
BRIEFINGS"
* SESSION RECORDING ADDED TO REMOTELY POSSIBLE
Avalan Technology, Inc. has begun shipping version 3.1 of
Remotely
Possible/32, its world-class remote control software. The new
version
features session recording, which provides training centers, help
desks,
call centers and support centers with the ability to record every
detail of
calls made to the host computer during a remote control session,
as well as
to monitor the session in real time.
"The leading call centers in the country use our technology
to monitor
their agents or sales representatives," said Rick Tacelli,
Vice President
of Sales and Marketing at Avalan. "The managers are
challenged to identify
weak areas in their call center so they can better manage their
agents and
improve overall productivity. Efficiency is the name of the
game."
The software records screen information, which can then be played
back
using a play back utility currently being developed by Avalan.
Users can
also choose to record multiple sessions simultaneously or control
NT
servers remotely.
The program provides full remote control capabilities of any
desktop PC
via network access, dial-up or through the Internet for remote
system
support, multi-host viewing or file transfer. The program
supports
Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, making it the only 32-bit remote
control product
offering complete support for NT on both the Intel and Digital
Alpha
platforms. Windows NT 3.51 and Windows 95 are also fully
supported.
Remotely Possible/32 also allows a technical support person to
install
the program onto a user's machine in order to troubleshoot a
particular
computer and fix any problems that are found. The remote install
feature
lets network administrators install the program from their NT
machine onto
any other remote NT PC quickly and easily over a LAN. For
security
purposes, the program requires that users be logged on as an NT
administrator in order to access the remote install capability.
Remotely Possible/32 provides the fastest screen refresh rates
available
in the industry, while the program's remote viewer allows for the
monitoring of several remote host screens simultaneously.
---------------------------
* REMOTELY POSSIBLE/32 FOR DIGITAL ALPHA NT 4.0 IS NOW SHIPPING
Remotely Possible/32 (Alpha) version 3.1b was released on Monday,
3 March 1997. This version supports Digital's Alpha platform on
both NT 3.51 and NT 4.0. The previous Alpha version (RP32 v3.0

3. "NT RELATED NEWS"
* NEW NT ZERO ADMIN KITS FOR NT WORKSTATION
The Zero Administration Kit for Windows NT Workstation 4.0 is a
set of tools, methodologies, and guidelines for IT Managers and
OEMs that incorporates and supplements existing Windows NT 4.0
technologies to allow for simplified implementation of a secure,
policy-based management. It takes advantage of the security and
reliability of the Windows NT file system (NTFS). In addition,
the power and flexibility of system policies and user profiles,
which are already built into the operating system, make Windows-
based computers easier to manage by storing configuration
information on the server and limiting end user access.
The Zero Administration Kit introduces two new modes, Taskstation
Mode and Appstation Mode. Taskstation Mode is geared for the
worker
who needs streamlined access to a single line of business
application
or a browser-based application. Appstation Mode is perfect for
the
employee who needs access to multiple applications but perhaps
doesn't have the experience to take advantage of the flexibility
of a complex system.
The Features
The Zero Administration Kits features, which you can see in
the
online demonstration, eliminate end-user access to system files
and unauthorized applications. This means fewer help-desk calls
for you. Over the long run, all this adds up to a noticeable
reduction in the total cost of operating. You'll be able to:
- Centralize the configuration of the desktop.
- Prohibit users from installing any applications.
- Allow applications and data to be accessed from the server.
The Zero Administration Kit uses today's Windows NT Workstation
4.0
technologies, including system policies and user profiles, to
implement
a secure, policy-based management environment. The kit can be
installed
by IT managers or PC manufacturers pre-configuring new Windows NT
Workstation 4.0 computers to run in two modes: Taskstation Mode
and
Appstation Mode.
Download demos of these modes to experience Zero Administration.
These
Director movies are bundled with a player. Download instructions:
go to http://www.ntsoftdist.com, and Double-click on the ZERO
ADMIN links
and save to your hard drive. These demos are optimized for
640x480,
256-color resolution. Please adjust your settings to reflect
this.

* UNIX IS SLOWLY SLIPPING
Network Computing recently reported that a study by IDC found
that overall
revenue for Unix workstations dropped 1 percent last year, mostly
due to
Windows NT's rise. Sun, meanwhile, retained its No. 1 slot in the
Unix
workstation business, accounting for 41 percent of units shipped,
up from
38.1 percent in 1995.
------------------------------------
* WINDOWS NT VERSION 5.0 EARLIEST IN 1998 !!
Microsoft officials have informed a core group of developers that
Windows
NT 5.0 will not ship until the first quarter of 1998, according
to a report
that is posted on the Computer Reseller News Web site at
http://techweb.cmp.com/crn/issues/727/
In a nondisclosure briefing held this week at the Redmond, Wash.,
corporate headquarters, Microsoft operating systems experts told
a group of
about 50 developers that the initial beta for Windows NT 5.0 will
not be
ready until late this summer, at the earliest, said attendees,
who requested
anonymity. The final versions of Windows NT Workstation and
Server 5.0 are
now slated for early next year, rather than late 1997, as
Microsoft had said
previously, officials said.
This is the first time Microsoft has acknowledged that Windows NT
5.0 will
be a 1998 product. "I'll be surprised if they make (the
first quarter of
1998),"
said one developer. "I think (the second quarter) is a more
likely bet."
--------------------------------------
* REALLY COOL TRAINING VIDEO'S FOR NT 4.0

More than worth it if you want to get up & running fast with
NT 4.0.
Dan Balter appears in several of these video's and his company
Marina
Consulting group gets the NTools E-News "Useful Tool Of The
Month"
recommendation. Their 800 number is 1-800-320-6859, and they sell
these
video's at a $10 discount. Go get some, you'll like them.

PARTY NEWS"
* FAULT TOLERANCE IN REAL LIFE: CASE STUDY
Seneca Falls Savings Bank of Seneca Falls, N.Y., had a close call
with data disaster when the bank's new client/server computer
system experienced a disk crash of one its enterprise servers.
With the bank's old mainframe system, that kind of crash would
have slowed operations for days. But Seneca Falls' new Windows
NT system was equipped with Octopus, a real-time mirroring data
protection software product for Windows NT from Octopus Tech-
nologies of Langhorn, Pennsylvania. Instantly, the Octopus
product swung the system over to a secondary server used to
back up the bank's Oracle database, making hardly a blip in the
bank's daily routine. The software also eliminated the time-
consuming task of restoring the previous day's data from a
backup tape and then manually inputting transactions posted
on the day of the crash.
"It was just a plain and simple case of hardware failure,
but
Octopus picked up on it immediately and saved us from
downtime,"
said John Talbot, the bank's director of operations. "The
product's ability to offer real-time data replication meant
that the backup database was right up to the second when it
took over, so for all practical purposes, it was as if the
crash never even happened."
The same safety procedure saved the day when the bank experienced
an overnight power failure a few months later. "When we
arrived
the next morning, we weren't immediately aware that anything had
happened because Octopus had done its job and the secondary
server
was up and running," Talbot said.
The Octopus product mirrors file changes as they occur from any
Windows NT source to any user-specified Windows NT target over
LAN and WAN. Specific types of disks, directories, subdirectories
and files can be designated for protection. Users enjoy
continuous
real-time backup from disk to disk, thereby limiting exposure and
significantly reducing recovery time over any existing backup
methods.
"Octopus' real-time data replication feature enables us to
give
our clients near-100% uptime even if the primary database server
fails for some reason," said Bob Hilborn, director of
technology
for Open Solutions Inc., the Glastonbury, CT vendor that supplied
the bank with the turnkey client/server system that included the
Octopus product. "We have built that redundancy into our
system
by having a second database server for backup, and Octopus is the
vehicle that permits us to mirror the data on that backup
server."
Octopus software is able to mirror data one-to-one, one-to-many,
many-to-one, or many-to-many with no additional hardware
requirements.
In a banking setting, this means it can operate in either single
or
multi-branch facilities. Disk space and available capacity are
continually monitored, preventing the over-extension of disk
space
usage due to a downed target site or unavailable target files.
Octopus ASO provides Automatic Switch Over of server control from
any failed source server to any designated target server,
including
Primary Domain Controllers (PDC) and Backup Domain Controllers
(BDC).
"Octopus provides users safety and protection for their data
that no
other utility can supply," said Alan Rabinovich, executive
vice
president of Octopus Technologies, Inc. "Users can create
and update
files while Octopus protects them. This protection is achieved by
mirroring 'delta' data to the same or different drives or to a
separate
system, all in real time."

* NEW CLUSTER SOFTWARE CONVOY ENABLES LOAD BALANCING
! I'd like some feedback from you on the following item, it is
clustering
! software that is available NOW and it would be great if you
could email
! me at stu@ntnews.com and tell me if this is a product you would
consider
! for implementing in your organization.
Valence Research have just released an exciting new software
product,
called Convoy Cluster Software, that should be of great interest
to you.
This product provides a new solution for enhancing the
availability and
scalability of TCP/IP services on Windows NT systems. Employing
advanced
clustering technology, Convoy transparently combines two OR MORE
Windows NT
systems to handle incoming client requests. This allows mission
critical,
Internet and corporate "Intranet" servers, such as web
and electronic mail
servers, to provide uninterrupted service and to scale their
performance as
needed to meet increased demand.
Keep in mind that this is something different from data mirroring
like
Octopus does it. The two product would be entirely complementing
each other
and there is no overlap in functionality.
You can obtain detailed information and a free, evaluation copy
of the Convoy
Cluster from Valence Research's web site at:

* SMARTBATCH-32 BRAND NEW POWERFUL BATCH PROCESSING TOOL
SmartBatch32(tm) provides a way to configure, manage and monitor
unattended processing on Windows NT and Windows 95 computer
systems.
Unattended processing is any activity that needs to take place on
a scheduled or unattended basis (i.e., there is no system
operator
available to continuously start, stop or monitor this
processing).
SmartBatch32 offers sophisticated capabilities to accomplish all
unattended processing needs.
Key Features
Flexible Scheduling:
- You can create Schedules to reoccur daily, weekly, monthly,
reoccur within a day, run on specific days, or exclude objects
from
running on specific days.
- Logical grouping of related activity
SmartBatch32 allows you to group related Operations (i.e., tasks)
into Steps and Steps into Jobs. For example you might want to
copy
a file, changes some values in the file and then input that file
into a utility such as ISQL (interactive SQL). This would be
setup
as three separate Operations that can be combined into one Step
so that
they are processed together. Any number of Steps can be added to
a Job.
The Operations in a Step and Steps in a Job are processed in
order.
Of course the Operations and Steps can easily be added, deleted,
modified or reordered within the SmartBatch32 Administrator.
- Error Checking
Provides for error checking of Operations to determine if a
program
ran successfully.
- Operators
Any number of Operators can be defined with the days and time
they
are available for notification and how they get notified (EMail,
Page or both).
- Alert Lists
Any number of Operators can be added to an Alert List and you can
have any number of Alert Lists. An Alert List can be assigned to
one
or more Operations.
- Notification By EMail, Alphanumeric Paging or Digital Paging
Operators can be notified by EMail (MAPI or SMTP), Alphanumeric
paging (TAP) and Digital paging. Notification can occur when an
Operation has started, completed or determined to be in error.
Any
number of Operators can be notified by using Alert Lists.
- Dependencies
Allows users to configure Dependency information to make sure
things
happen when the necessary conditions are met.
- Parameters
Allows users to configure Parameters to manage information that
may
change such as filenames and paths.
- Status
Tracks status information to determine what activity is taking
place
at any point in time.

5."HINTS
AND TIPS"
Win NT Magazine's e-zine UPDATE had a few SMS tips I thought
you would be very interested in:
* TIP: HELPFUL HINTS FOR DEPLOYING SMS
Thinking of implementing Microsoft's Systems Management Server
(SMS) on
your network? Here are some helpful guidelines to get you started
on the
right foot.
- Processor: Use at least a 133MHz Pentium for SMS and SQL Server
and
a symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) machine for large networks.
- Hard disk: Use separate hard disks for Windows NT, SQL Server,
and
SMS. You need to configure your SMS hard disk to use NTFS.
Ideally, SMS
will have at least 1GB of drive space available.
- Memory: SMS and SQL Server are both memory intensive. The
minimum
amount of memory you need to run NT and SMS is 24MB. Even then,
this
amount is very inadequate.
- Network bandwidth: Obviously the bigger the bandwidth, the
better
the performance. This adage is definitely true on primary SMS
sites. You
need a minimum of switched 100Base-T for the primary site.
- SQL Server optimization: Each instance of SMS Administrator
uses SQL
Server. The SMS executive and hierarchy managers also use SQL
Server.
Because SQL Server has numerous other uses, you might want to use
a dual
Pentium Pro with at least 128MB of memory.
- SMS load: I often see server installations running SMS and
numerous
other applications. A good idea is to monitor the load on your
SMS and
keep the SMS sites reasonably dedicated.

Just a nifty little trick to go along with your recommended
choice of file
systems. Even with NTFS volumes, a hacker can use a tool called
NT4DOS (I
think that's the name) which allows manipulation of an NTFS
volume from a
DOS-based volume. The only way to totally protect yourself would
be to
compress the NTFS volume, which may even help increase disk
performance
depending on the speed of the server. Great newsletter!!! Keep it
up
